Day 6 - Fluid


Today was a first for me and probably quite a sight for the neighbors, me trying to hold the umbrella and the camera to get the shot. I really like how this one turned out. I am still going to go try and photograph a fountain today if the rain stops.

This was definitely a first for me and am so happy with the outcome.

Creativity Bootcamp - Day Four

I took this picture last year and never did anything with it.  It is a play structure in a local park that I played on as a kid.  It is all metal and kids still love it today. 


I am really loving these exercises.  They are forcing me to think outside the box from where I would normally go.  Looking forward to tomorrow!!

Creativity Bootcamp - Day One

I am taking baby steps to become more and more creative every day and this is step one.  I actually had a really great time doing this today.  While I did not have access to an actual piano this one did just fine.

My First Fix it Friday

I came across the photography site that I love. Its called I Heart Faces. Every Friday they have something called fix it friday and this is my 1st attempt.

I cropped the photo and brightened up the eyes a bit.  I also changed the curves and contrast.

Apple Fritters from Start to Finish

Today I woke up and decided to make apple fritters.  I got the recipe from The Pioneer Woman Cooks.  It is one of my favorite sites and have made a few things that she has posted.  I would actually love to get her cookbook soon.

Now don't get me wrong, I know that my photos and finished product do not come close to hers but this is the first time that I have photographed as I cooked  With that being said, here we go....

The ingredients:

Start off by filling a heavy pan or pot about 1/2 full of Canola Oil and turn it on Medium heat, be careful to watch the heat as you don't want it to get too hot but more on that later...

Next, mix the dry ingredients together...

Crack 2 eggs into separate bowl and beat them with a fork...

Add the vanilla to the eggs...

and mix together...

add the egg mixture to the dry ingredients...

mix until just combined...

add melted butter and milk to dry mixture...

Peel and cut 2 apples into small pieces...

add to batter and mix...

get a plate or shallow bowl and line it with paper towels...

take a small amount of batter and drop it in grease to test the heat of the grease (mine was too cold at first)

so there should be more pictures here but I got a little distracted when it came time to cook these little morsels of goodness, so here is what you are to do. Drop them by teaspoon full into hot grease 4 or 5 at a time. Don't do more as you really need to give the fritters room to swim. Once one side has browned (should be about 2 minutes) flip them to allow the other side to brown. Once they are brown on both sides keep flipping for about 2 more minutes.

If you make them too big they will not cook all the way through (my first batch were raw in the middle).

Make a glaze with icing sugar and milk and a little bit of vanilla. Once the fritters have cooled just a bit dump the fritter in the glaze and roll it around and then place it on a cooling rack with a cookie tray under to catch the dripping glaze.

Here they are!!! They were sooo good. I will be making them again very soon but this time will be with saskatoons instead of apples.

Ingredients

* FRITTERS
* 2 cups All-purpose Flour
* ½ cups Sugar
* 3 Tablespoons Sugar
* 2-¼ teaspoons Baking Powder
* 1-¼ teaspoon Salt
* 2 teaspoons Ground Cinnamon
* 2 whole Large Eggs
* ¾ cups Whole Milk
* 2 teaspoons Vanilla Extract
* 2 Tablespoons Melted Butter
* 2 whole Granny Smith Apples, Peeled And Diced
* Powdered Sugar (optional, For Dusting)
* GLAZE (optional)
* 1-½ cup Powdered Sugar
* ¼ teaspoons Salt
* ¼ teaspoons Vanilla
* ¼ cups Milk

Preparation Instructions

In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.

In a separate bowl, beat the eggs with a fork, then add milk, melted butter, and vanilla.

Gently fold dry and wet ingredients together until just combined (do not overmix.) Fold in apples. Add enough apples to make a very chunky batter.

Heat a couple of inches of canola oil over medium to medium-low heat. When it gets hot, drop a little drop of batter into the oil. If it sizzles immediately and rises to the top, the oil is ready; if it burns quickly, turn down the heat.

Drop teaspoons of batter into the hot oil, six or eight at a time. Sometimes they’ll flip over by themselves; sometimes you have to flip them. Just watch them and make sure they don’t get too brown, but cook them long enough to make sure the batter’s cooked through, about 2 to 2 1/2 minutes total.

Remove and drain on a paper towel. Dust very generously with powdered sugar, or dip fritters in a light doughnut glaze (mix all glaze ingredients together, then dunk warm fritters).

Serve warm!
